                                                                                Marengo Feb 2nd 1864

                                Esteemed Friend

Oh let thy heart not despise me for that which I am ignorant of.  Thou who art arrayed in the robes of thought too deep for me to penetrate.  Forgive me my many failings that have thrown themselves between you and me.  Oft have I recalled the hours I spent in your company and try to bring to mind what I have done to offend one whose friendship I prized more than the wealth of a thousand worlds like this.  Will you please write and explain what caused all of this trouble

                                                                                                         Yours,
                                                                                                        C.M.W.[2]
